Student who raped his girlfriend to death, sentenced to death by hanging

A High Court sitting in Akure, Ondo state has sentenced to death the killer boyfriend Chukwudi Onweniwe of an HND student of Rufus Giwa Polytechnic Owo, Nifemi Adeyeoye to death by hanging. Chukwudi Onweniwe was dragged before the court in May 22 2017 on a four count charge of action endangering life, kidnapping and abduction, rape and murder. . According to the Prosecutor, Jumoke Ogunjebi said the accused person abducted the deceased and took her “to a farm near Alayere, Ogbese, raped her and then snuffed life out of her by choking and strangulating her to death. The police prosecutor, Inspector John Aderibigbe said that one of the motorcyclists who testified in the case reported the suspicious movement of the accused person and the deceased at the police station.  Aderibigbe said that the case was later transferred to Special Anti Cultism Squad in Akure. A serious incident happened this morning in the department of HOME SCIENCE, NUTRITION ND DIETETICS department in University of Nigeria, Nsukka Campus. Charms and broken eggs was seen in the premises leading to the general office of the department. Palm frond was also seen tired around the entrance leading to offices and lecture rooms. Lecturers and students were seen in the morning praying, casting and binding. UNILORIN student dies

After a successful completion of her final exams at the University of Ilorin, Taofeeqah Oloriegbe, 23, was reported dead five days to her convocation. Oloriegbe who finished with second class (Upper Division) from the Department of Electrical Engineering died on Monday, October 16 died after a brief illness. With sketchy details surrounding her death, Oloriegbe according to her friend was said to have complained of pain in her hand before she died. The University's Public Relations Officer, Mr Kunle Akogun and the Student Union President, Mr Adebisi Abimbola have confirmed the demise of the student. Abimbola said,  “I became extremely sober when I heard of her death. We used to be in the same class. She was very jovial, friendly, liberal and decent." In a similar event, a final year student of the Umar Musa Yaradu'a University in Katsina reportedly died of snakebite on Sunday, October 15, 2017.

The Federal government has stopped funding over 150 students on scholarship in Europe and America. They face deportation and the prospect of losing all they've worked for. Thanks to the poor state of education in the country, and the idea of finding greener pastures in the West, most Nigerian students aspire to study abroad at some stage in their education, usually at the university level. Because education for foreign students is expensive in most western countries, scholarships are usually the first folder to be opened. Among all the many options that they have, the Federal government and its many agencies sponsor some of these initiatives. The idea is to expose some of the brightest minds from local schools to the training and culture in foreign universities with the eventual aim of diffusing their learnings into the system when they return.
