*đŸ“£Unilorin Senate Council faults SU Dinner; Suspends Social Secretary*đŸ“£
The Senate Council of the University of Ilorin has faulted the Students’ Union dinner/awards that took place on Friday, 20th May 2016 at the Multipurpose Hall of the university. This came up during the 10th sitting of the senate council which held on Saturday, 21st May 2016, at the Lecture Theatre 2 (LT 2).
Not less than nine senators cutting across various faculties alleged that the Students’ Union Social secretary Com. Aondongushua Termeen Isaac a.k.a Ashosho fell short of expectation and perpetrated some punishable acts before and during the SU dinner/awards night.
The Social Secretary was alleged to have decided to bring Funke Akindele a.k.a Jenifa as guest appearance for the dinner for an outrageous amount of five hundred thousand naira *(N500, 000),* despite knowing that she would just appear for few minutes, and after the Senate Council had earlier approved that YC should be the guest artiste for the dinner for Seven hundred Thousand Naira *(N700, 000)*.
He was also accused of providing insufficient and sour refreshment that are detrimental to students’ health at the dinner after also approving a reasonable amount for it. Likewise, he was reported to have collected funds from recipients of some certain awards and that most of the persons awarded on that night were not on merit. An instance was given of a restaurant which just started operation on campus about three weeks ago, and was awarded the restaurant of the year after settling the Social Secretary with a whooping amount of Ten Thousand Naira (N10, 000).
As if that was not enough, Senator Adekanbi Ademola representing Faculty of Law Constituency and Senator Adedotun representing Faculty of Communication and Information Sciences Constituency later tendered their evidences to support their assertion that the Social Secretary performed short of expectation. The former was a WhatsApp chat between the senator and the social secretary, where the senator was asked to pay a certain amount before he could win the award for *The Writer of the year.*The latter was the record of how voting was done in favour of a particular nominee for the award of the *Social media personality of the year.*
After these allegations were reeled out, Senator Edward representing Faculty of Arts constituency later moved a motion that the Social Secretary should avail the senate council with a detailed financial breakdown of the dinner and a 5-man committee should be constituted to see to that effect, especially for the awards.
Senator Ibadan of faculty of education constituency, also moved a motion that the social secretary should be suspended for two weeks and be stripped off of 2 month salaries, while Senator Bello Lateef of Faculty of Arts constituency moved that he should be suspended for just ten working days, Senator Favour of faculty of life science constituency on the other hand moved that he should be suspended for just two weeks.
At the end of the day, and since the social secretary could not deny the allegations. The senate council then affirmed that the social secretary should be punished and that the punishment should be inform of a suspension, hence the house concluded after voting that he should be suspended for just *ten working days* and that shouldn’t stop him from being accountable to the budget control committee and the other committee set up to see to the issue of the award during his suspension.
Earlier before the pronouncement of his suspension, The Senate President, Senator Moshood Abdulsalam Orire while giving his verdict on the issue said that the house won’t hesitate to retract any award from any recipient that doesn’t merit it.
All efforts by UCJ Unilorin to hear from the social director after he was suspended proved abortive, as he left immediately after the suspension was validated.
